JANE AUSTEN’S EMMA AND PRESENT DAY WOMAN A STUDY ON UNCHANGED SOCIETY EVEN AFTER CENTURIES

Abstract

The portrayal of life in a conservative, pastoral setting, and kaleidoscopic breadth of social class, educational background and marital status among the female characters present a social commentary on the inadequacies of the education women received. Against such a rich backdrop, Austen redefines female education by arguing that a holistic form of learning such as Emma Wood house’s journey of auto-didacticism trumps a formal schooling which only aims to ensnare a useful marriage. The re-reading of the her Emma by the generations to generations reveal a secret that there is no change in terms of treating woman in the society for which many organizations fighting for. In this light, the present paper presents a comparative study of the circumstances and atmosphere prevailed during 18th century and in 21st century by reading Jane Austen’s novel, Emma. Gender discrimination, waves of feminism, championing the plights of woman and many other movements in global society continuously waged war against such situations. However, the expected changes in treatment of woman yet to come in the future by the so called civilized society.

Abstract

UNDERSTANDING PROMINENT CHARACTERS IN THE NOVELS OF CHITRA BANERJEE DIVAKARUNI – SISTER OF MY HEART

Abstract

Sister of My Heart is a novel by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni. First published in 1999, this novel was followed in 2002 by a sequel The Vine of Desire. The story centers on two Indian girls, Anju and Sudha. The girls narrate their life stories in alternating chapters. The book follows Sudha and Anju through childhood, adolescence, and early adulthood. Although some of the characters immigrate to the United States, most of the story is set in India.

Abstract

English language has been in India for over 200 Years now. It has gone through numerous stages of development, acceptance and non-acceptance. Certain strata of Indian society have accepted it as the first language; some see it as the essential second language whereas others regard it as a link language, both at the notational and the international level. In all the above cases English remains an important language and hence the debates, the discussions, and the deliberations, throughout the country, have always continued to focus on the teaching and learning of English. India is a vast country and inhabits numerous tribes with varying ways of life. This paper will deliberately confine the discussion to the lesson plan for teaching of ESL in the tribal areas.

Abstract

A study done on cultural changes and identity crisis in consideration of arranged marriages – novel. Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni is an immigrant writer whose stories deal with the life of Indian immigrants in America, especially women immigrants in America. As orthodox Indian women, they are unable to adapt themselves to the American culture, which they think has no value. Free society, sexual freedom, cohabitation, neglect of parents and elders are unheard of in India, and when an Indian immigrant woman makes an encounter with such factors in America, she is shaken mentally and cultural conflict crops up in her resulting in a quandary in which she remains indecisive.
