Abstract

Though William Shakespeare lived and produced his literary works four centuries ago, yet, people of all walks, irrespective of age, profession, region and religion enjoy the pleasure of reading for the freshness and universality. I am one such lovers of Shakespeare who spellbound, reading the plays ‘The Merchant of Venice’ and ‘Romeo and Juliet’. At the time, I found analyzing Shakespeare’s work focusing on the skill set is most appropriate and suits to fulfill the current day complicated needs and meet our targets without huddles. The objective of the work is to explore and unravel Soft skills portrayed in Shakespeare’s play ‘The Merchant of Venice’. The spontaneity and problem solving skills illustrated by the female protagonist, Portia like Crisis Management, out of the box thinking and lateral thinking to rescue her husband’s friend Antonio from the crutches of the cruel money lender Shylock are exemplary. In fact, in the present modern age there are many issues and transactions that can be resolved with soft skills. Hence the youth, especially girls need to equip themselves with these qualities in day to day interactions with others to manage a smooth flow of life with amicability.

FEMINISTIC PERSPECTIVES IN THOMAS KENEALLY’S NEW-HISTORICISM: AN AUSTRALIAN WRITING

Abstract

The writer, historical novelist who has taken the Australian literature far beyond the country is Thomas Keneally. All though modern in their psychology and style, many of his novels are reflections of historical material. He is the writer of Historical Fiction and an exponent of ideological production of emerging Australian national characters. Thomas Keneally admitted the realities of the World War I & World War II in his fictional novels The Daughters of Mars and Schindler’s Ark. Feminism’ is a concept which came into light in 1960’s. It is civilization as a whole that produces the creature which is described as ‘feminine’. In the novel Schindler Ark, the female characters played an important role. One of the main characters is Emilie Schindler. Being neglected by her husband, she managed to manage herself to support him especially in his needs and deeds that to in his absence. She was mostly called as Oskar’s abandoned wife by the readers. This reveals the insecurity of women. There was no protection either for men or women under the dictatorship of Hitler. Not for equal rights but they were tortured, punished, worked and killed. Schindler, in those hard times, he has extended his level best to the women. An Australian living treasure, Thomas Keneally’s 29th novel is Daughters of Mars which revisits the World War I from the perspective of two sisters who are like the modern women, the durance sisters are courageous enough. They are good at taking the self- decisions. The nurses see the blood of this conflict on hospital ships and operating theatres. The other aspect of the novel was that women were placed on the battlefields. They were called the female soldiers. Daughters of Mars for the first time placed the women on the battlefields. War is not always about the men. It is also about the women. ‘Daughters of Mars’ is a historical novel which reconstructs its past. The history of Australia and its participation in the Gallipoli Campaign includes the future of Australia. Historical writer Keneally has drawn an inspiration from the actual wartime’s dairies, historical hospital and the real hospital ships. Like the soldiers of every war, Naomi heroism was noticed during the disastrous events in the Aegean Sea. New Historicism shifts the focus away from the factual content of historical account. The text is interpreted by different cultures to fit the ideological needs of power structures. Thus Daughters of Mars is an effort of author to assimilate the literary text into history is supported by the feminism, post structuralism doctrines of totality and reality. New Historicism has distinct affinities with resonances; the author is interested in issues of history. He has interpreted the term history in a much broader sense. He emphasised literature and history as inseparable. As New Historicism believes that there are different interpretations of facts. Keneally took his readers back to history to the facts. He has given life to the past through his writings.

Abstract

Human….this word appears to be very supreme when compared with other living creatures. Though man is also one among the living creatures, yet he is considered to be the special among them. However, in my opinion, man is not an exception before the supernatural power. The nature always takes a lion’s share in showing the highest and supremacy over everyone and on anything from the powerful and ferocious animal to intellectual and super brained human. Some may say that the nature is quiet understandable and pleasant, some others say it’s very unruly and some may utter it is having supernatural powers. However, whatever the perceptions are, they may vary from person to person time to time or place to place, but it still has some notable and remarkable identity over the periods of time and it remains the same for future generations also. It’s universally known fact that the writers of various times and various places write innumerable writings on nature as nature has unlimited powers to explore and the sky is the boundary to say about the nature. Hence, this paper majorly focuses on the ecology, the supernatural powers through nature, the exploitation of nature, the adventures of supernatural powers and the special features of Natural world through the poem of The Rime of The Ancient Mariner and Kubla khan by S.T.Coleridge. This paper traces out the depiction of supernatural elements, human guilt, retribution and tribulations towards nature. It also depicts the psychological curiosity of man, humanity’s deepest desires and creative and prophetic powers with the help of these two poems of S.T.Coleridge.

CHILD ABUSE IN MAHESH DATTANI’S THIRTY DAYS IN SEPTEMBER

Abstract

Mahesh Dattani, a renowned playwright, is considered to be the most prominent literary figure in Indian English Literature. He basically deals his play with social issues. The play called Thirty Days in September also deals with the social issues like Child Abuse. Here in the play, the playwright showed how the close caregiver namely, Vinay took advantage of his sibling called Shanta who is the mother of the protagonist Mala. Later on, this cheap man also abused his own niece, called Mala who is the daughter of Shanta. The protagonist Mala accused her mother for her evil past. She meant to say that she could get rid of from her sufferings and the stingy man called, Vinay if her mother opened up her mouth. Silence out did the play for Mala’s sufferings.

INDIVIDUAL AND IDENTITY IN JAYANTH KAIKINI\'S \'NO PRESENTS PLEASE\'

Abstract

Jayanth Kaikini\'s short story collection \'No Presents Please\' won the prestigious DSC prize for South Asian Literature in 2019. The collection has sixteen short stories written in Kannada and was translated into English by Tejaswini Niranjana. This research article explores the theme of \'Individual and Identity\' in two stories- the title story of \'No Presents Please\' and another story titled \'City without Mirrors\'. All the stories in this collection of Jayanth Kaikini are set in Mumbai, in its middle class milieu, and the city becomes an innately indispensable character. In the story \'No Presents Please\', Asavari Lokhande and Popat grow up unaware of their identities but it is this or perhaps the lack of it which disturbs Popat and eventually their imminent marriage. In \'City Without Mirrors\' the protagonist Satyajit Datta has no one to call his own but considers himself married to Mumbai. Like most of Mumbaikars, Satyajit came to this city seeking employment, changed many jobs, houses and street food sellers; till the need for a \'room of one\'s own made him rent a tiny area in the terrace of a three storied flat. Having crossed the ideal Indian marriable age, Satyajit, in his forties still stayed single, enduring jokes about his single status. But an unexpected proposal stirs his sober life and though he doesn\'t meet the girl, her father and readers continue to hope. The quest for identity is every being\'s birthright and next to food, clothing and shelter; identity is the fourth element an individual strives and seeks all through his life. Mumbai as a city has always welcomed diverse immigrants who have made it their home. The city doesn\'t strictly segregate people and there is little time to do so as in the race to survive- days, nights and years roll by and in the process strangers become friends and family appears strangely alienated.
