Abstract

The construction sector is inherently prone to uncertainties and risks that frequently lead to project delays. A delay is defined as the completion of a project beyond the agreed contractual timeline. While it is nearly impossible to eliminate all delays, identifying their primary causes can help mitigate their effects. Delays negatively impact project cost, time, and quality, which necessitates the implementation of effective management strategies. Among these strategies, contractual agreements serve as a critical tool for managing delays. This study explores delay issues in construction projects by comparing delay management clauses in contracts used in developed countries with those in India. The research highlights factors responsible for project delays, including delayed payments, financing issues, slow approval processes, material shortages, labor inefficiencies, and adverse weather conditions. Additionally, this study suggests revisions to Indian construction contracts to improve delay management and optimize project efficiency. The findings contribute to the broader understanding of project delays and provide a foundation for future research in this domain.

A STUDY ON COST AND TIME OVERRUNS IN CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS

Abstract

The construction industry is a significant contributor to economic development, yet it frequently encounters challenges that lead to delays and cost overruns. The successful execution of a construction project largely depends on managing these two aspects effectively. This study investigates cost and time overruns through a structured questionnaire survey distributed to project engineers, contractors, site engineers, and clients. A total of 42 questions were included in the survey to determine the occurrence and impact of key factors. Statistical analysis was performed to identify the most critical causes of delays and financial overruns. The findings reveal that various factors contribute to these issues, with consensus observed among industry professionals. This research aims to highlight the primary causes of time and cost overruns and provide practical solutions to mitigate these challenges.

The findings emphasize the need for continuous learning and proactive risk management to create a secure work environment.

Abstract

The construction industry, India\'s second-largest sector after agriculture, frequently encounters cost overruns and schedule delays. To address these challenges, managing Critical Success Factors (CSFs) is essential for ensuring project success. This study aims to identify key CSFs by analyzing responses from construction professionals through structured surveys. Since success perceptions vary among stakeholders, standardizing evaluation criteria is crucial. The study advocates adopting the \"Iron Triangle\" model—Time, Quality, and Cost (TQC)—to assess project performance. Through an analysis of 40 survey responses, a comprehensive CSF framework is developed, distinguishing factors influencing small and large-scale projects. The findings provide insights into improving project management practices, reducing inefficiencies, and enhancing overall construction outcomes in India.

A survey was conducted among construction firms to identify common challenges and best practices. Findings indicate that material availability, workforce stability, and strategic resource planning are key factors influencing project efficiency. This research suggests adopting systematic management approaches to reduce delays, enhance productivity, and improve project outcomes.

In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) has integrated into most aspects of our everyday lives and workplace equality, creating both positive and negative potential. Because of AI capabilities, which include social media, smart devices, and automated processes, humanity is losing the power of decision making into machines. This trend creates significant concerns about misinformation, accountability and responsibility, bias, privacy, and trust. AI will also continue to impact people in the workplace as it advances; the basic parts of jobs will be more automated and as new specialized jobs are created, some workers will be displaced and become part of the re-organization of workers due to AI. This brings about a category of fears surrounding data security, and transparencies considerations which provides AI conclusions, and trust. Still, there are far-reaching potential for some benefits of artificial intelligence, to including better health care, targeted marketing, greater outputs, and new jobs.
